Plant collections
Flower of the famous Sacred lotus
Ever since La Concepcion estate was purchased by Malaga City Council, the expansion of the number
of species to be found in the garden has been a major priority. The collections of flora, which are
situated on the fringes of the historical garden, are planted in strict accordance with scientific
criteria and have significantly expanded the landscaped area of the estate. In a living museum such
as this, it is essential to attempt to offer a wide variety of plants while at the same time
following a certain “philosophy”. Our main objective here has been to create the largest possible
display of subtropical species, taking advantage of the fact that Malaga’s climate enables us to
cultivate plants from warmer regions of the world that would find it extremely difficult to thrive
in other parts of Europe. Since these collections are completed by groups of indigenous plants from
our own area, they provide the best possible testimony to our planet’s floral diversity. Notable
among the collections that have been introduced here is the palm tree collection, which boasts the
largest number of specimens of this particular species to be found at this latitude and is
currently considered the finest outdoor collection of its type in Europe. Also on display here are
collections of aquatic plants, bamboos, cacti and succulents, among others. Another example is our
collection of traditional Malaga species of vine, which aims to revive varieties of the plant that
are no longer used and which are in danger of extinction.
