Citrus trees
Lemons (Citrus lemon) at La Concepcion
Lemon and orange trees are the most eminent members of the Rutaceae family. Their high vitamin C
and citric acid content means that they have an almost endless list of applications including use
as antiscorbutics, antiseptics, cosmetics and even as seasoning for a variety of different dishes.
La Concepcion began life as an agricultural estate. Lemon trees grew on its terraced slopes
and the fruit that they produced was so important, commercially speaking, that it even had its own
brand. A rough calculation, then, will tell us that the trees that still thrive here today must be
in the region of 150 years old. Some are of the “Real” variety, which is extremely old and
currently in decline. The lemon that it produces, known popularly as “limon cascaruo”, is highly
typical in Malaga, where it is still sold at city centre stalls during Easter week and eaten with a
pinch of salt.
The citrus species to be found here are
Citrus aurantium,
Citrus limon,
Citrus maxima ,
Citrus sinensis,
Citrus x nobilis and
Fortunella margarita.
