The Herbarium
Pressed plants in the Herbarium
The purpose of a herbarium is to provide storage for the largest possible number of dehydrated
plants so that the way in which they flower and bear fruit can be studied at any time, without
having to wait for the appropriate period of the year or travel to areas of the world to which the
plant in question is native. In addition, the amassing of plants from all corners of the globe
creates a “plant library” that is extremely useful for vegetation-related consultations and
studies. The task of collecting, determining and storing plants is undertaken by highly-qualified
personnel who observe a strict methodological protocol in doing so. Each plant is registered and
authenticated, while the specially-designed cupboards in which they are stored must be totally
air-tight and free of humidity so that harmful pests such as Lepisma saccharina can eliminated by
fumigation without any leakages occurring.
The herbarium at La Concepcion is home to some 8,000 specimens of ornamental and wild plants
encompassing almost 1,000 different species, all of which have been identified, registered and had
their details stored on computer. These specimens were collected in the parks and gardens of Malaga
and on the western Costa del Sol in the case of the ornamental plants, while their wilder
counterparts were brought in from the mountain areas of Malaga, Huelva and Granada, among others.
Plants from the
Exsiccata and donations from private contributors can also be found in the collection.
The press used to dry the plants collected
Since the Botanical Garden joined the Iberian and Macaronesian Herbarium Association in 1998, the
Municipal Botanical Trust has collaborated each year in the production of the Exsiccata, a
scientific publication that enables herbaria to exchange specimens with other institutions in Spain
and Portugal. Specimens have also been exchanged with a number of prestigious scientific
institutions.
In addition, our Herbarium has also contacted other scientific institutions to request loans
of herbarium specimens for study and research purposes.
